2009 Stamford Civic Society Awards

The 2009 Awards evening was held on 17th February at the Arts Centre. About 85 people attended, and enjoyed an evening of talk, light refreshments and wine.

The Awards were presented by Tim Lee, President of the Stamford Chamber of Trade and Commerce. Before the presentations, Tim spoke briefly about the Chamber’s activities and what they were doing to promote Stamford. The 2009 Awards were as follows:

Design
Wolfgang Buttress

The design of the Milestone on Red Lion Square

Craftsmanship
Ana Ruiz

Carving the Milestone on Red Lion Square

Wolfgang was the designer of the whole Gateway project; this award was specifically for the much-admired milestone on Red Lion Square. Ana Ruiz carved the milestone. Unfortunately neither Ana or Wolfgang was able to be with us, and the awards were accepted on their behalf by Graddon Rowlands.

Conversion
Philip Heath

The conversion of 22 Austin Street, Stamford

The Society was impressed by the quality of this conversion and the imaginative way in which it has been done, especially with the internal courtyards, yet successfully retaining the character of the building.

Refurbishment
Alan Short

The refurbishment of 3 St. Mary's Place, Stamford

Refurbishment
E. Bowman & Sons Ltd

The refurbishment of 3 St. Mary's Place, Stamford

This property has be refurbished to a high standard; the Society was particularly impressed with the installation of an eco-friendly heating system, and the work still going on to restore one of Stamford’s town gardens.

Stamford Public Spaces – Plantsmanship
Peter Heyes

The greening of Stamford

Peter has worked tirelessly to improve many of Stamford’s open spaces, often with little recognition. The sites include the bandstand on the Recreation Ground, St Mary’s Churchyard and the piece of land by the river in Wharf Road.
