Civic Day 2011

Civic Voice is the national charity for the civic movement in England. Stamford Civic Society is a member of Civic Voice, in order to take advantage of the contacts with other societies, and the experiences they can share with us.

Civic Day is a new initiative when civic societies across England will invite people to celebrate their area and discover more about where they live. A diverse program of events and activities showcasing civic society activity took placed, focused on Saturday, June 25th 2011 as the first Civic Day.

Here in Stamford, we celebrated Civic Day in conjunction with some of the local schools. The Town Hall hosted a debate on Tuesday June 21st, involving the Endowed Schools and Queen Eleanor School; the subject under debate was:

‘This House believes that development for the future is more important for Stamford than preservation of the past’.

After excellent speeches both for and against the motion, the proposition was carried. An audience of about 50 people made up of people with an interest in education and civic society members had an enjoyable and instructive evening, listening to the views of the 15-17 year olds on the panel.

The Malcolm Sergeant School prepared a quiz about Stamford, which was published in the Stamford Mercury on June 25th. You can see a copy here, and after you have struggled with it, the answers are here. Our congratulations to the winner of the quiz, Alan Tutt, whose name was picked out of the hat by pupils at the Malcolm Sergeant school.
