​Concern has been expressed by Stamford Civic Society and Stamford Town Council about a number of buildings and sites within or adjacent to the conservation areas in the town of Stamford.
 
As a result of these concerns, a discussion document has been produced.  This was presented to the South Kesteven Conservation Officer at a recent meeting.
 
This is a sensitive problem with no easy solution as the owners of these sites and buildings are entitled to their privacy.  But it is felt that conservation issues are a paramount concern in theses cases; hence highlighting theses issues is a positive step forward in the preservation of Stamford Town Conservation Areas.

​Stamford Civic Society was formed in 1962 to lobby for the conservation and preservation of the town, while also looking to its future prosperity.  This Society ethos still rings true today and is uppermost in all our work for the town, its residents and businesses.

We are concerned that a few of the buildings and sites within the town are showing signs of neglect or abandonment.  In some instances, this process has been going on for a number of years.  This we think could in part be addressed by talking with the owners, the local authorities and others, in order to accurately understand the situation pertinent to each individual property and its owner and seek a way forward.

​Our AGM was a well attended meeting, where I was once more elected as your Chairman, along with our existing committee: we thank you for your confidence in our abilities to continue our work of fulfilling the Civic Societies four main objectives over the coming months.

Stamford Civic Society Newsletter Summer 2025​

We have had a busy few months focussed upon raising the profile of the Civic Society.  To this end we celebrated National Civic Day, which was on 14th June.  We held a vote for the favourite street in Stamford.  Many of you may have seen us in the High Street where we based ourselves outside the library. This caused much interest, and a large variety of streets were nominated.  We were surprised however, that of those people that we spoke to, how many of them were visitors to the town.  This high proportion of visitors gave a distorted result as they all voted for the High Street as it was the only street name that they knew.

​​The Civic Society Committee have had a busy few months. The obvious results of work undertaken by Committee member Tim Lee, and supported by the rest of the committee is the newly installed Welcome To Stamford Arch in Sheepmarket and Horseshoe Lane.  This project has taken over a year to finalise and we hope that you appreciate its completed result.

Your committee has been busy this year, and is very pleased to welcome two new members,
Nicola Sandall, and James Tusting.  Nicola is a Stamfordian born and breed who is now a Tour Guide taking visitors around Stamford.  She also produces shows at the Corn Exchange.
James is Head of Land and Property at Burghley, overseeing the Estate’s property business and its various interests around Stamford.
We are indebted to our Treasurer Martin Lander who, after serving as our Treasurer for a number of years, wishes to stand down from this position.  Thus, we are actively looking for a volunteer to replace him. Please consider this opportunity to serve our Society and Stamford, if you are aware of anyone who you think would like to join us in this capacity.
