Stamford Civic Society Heritage Open Days 2013


We are offering a series of tours centered around the different types of stone of the town and the unique character these building materials have imparted.

Saturday 14 September

Tour of Stamford Churches exploring the history, architecture and building materials of the churches, led by local historians.

10.30am:

St George’s: St George’s Square PE9 2BN. Tour guide: John Smith

 2.00pm:

St Mary’s: St Mary’s Hill, PE9 2DF. Tour guide: John Smith

St Martin’s: High Street St Martin's, PE9 2NT. Tour guide: Chris Davies

Meet inside the church that you wish to visit.

Saturday 14 September 10.00am – 4.00pm

At St John’s Church: St John’s Street, PE9 2DB.

Display and demonstration of Collyweston slating, a traditional limestone roofing material, by local expert David Ellis. No booking is needed.

You can also visit All Saints’ Church (All Saints’ Place, PE9 2AG) to find out about and see a newly installed stone sundial, and the restored original, now situated inside the church.

Saturday 14 September, 5.30pm – 7.00pm

Tour of town to follow the Stone Trail looking at the different stone and its use in the various buildings of Stamford.

Meet at Stamford Town Hall, St Mary's Hill, Stamford. PE9 2DR

Sunday 15 September, 2pm

Tour of St John’s Church exploring the history, architecture and building materials of the church, led by local historian John Smith.

Sunday 15 September, 5.30pm – 7.00pm
