About the Society
Stamford Civic Society was formed by a small group in the early 1960s to defend the town's heritage and actively fight for its preservation and improvement.
Since then, it has grown to a membership of over 200; in addition to our concerns about the town's heritage and conservation, we orgainise visits to local places of interest, organise talks on a variety of subjects, run projects to enhance the town, work with local schools to encourage the children to take an interest in their town, run an awards scheme and when necessary, campaign on issues affecting Stamford.
We invite you to join us.

One of the Society’s main roles is to monitor the planning applications that affect Stamford, especially in the Conservation Areas. The Society regularly appears at District Council planning meetings when applications of particular importance are being discussed, and also makes representations to the Planning Inspectorate when decisions are appealed. Although our primary focus is on Stamford’s conservation area, we are always happy to discuss developments elsewhere in Stamford wherever it may be helpful. Please contact us if you would like our advice or support. A variety of publications have been produced over the years, and many of them are available in our archives section of the website.
The Stamford Urban Group became part of the Civic Society in early 2013, thus extending our practical involvement in helping to keep Stamford looking great.
A quarterly newsletter is distributed to members.
The Society’s objectives are set out formally in its Constitution.
