Arrivals and departures

We cannot thank Gwyneth Gibbs enough for her enthusiasm, determination and hard work over the past 11 years as the Society’s Chairman. Gwyneth stood down at the AGM and the Society welcomed a new Chairman – Jim Mason, who will introduce himself to members over the coming months.

Gwyneth Gibbs
Gwyneth read Astronomy at UCL, then worked briefly for GCHQ, where she was introduced to computers, and stayed in the industry first as a programmer, later as a senior manager, until she retired in 2006, when the move to Stamford took place. The daughter of two history graduates, inevitably she always had an interest in history and joining the Civic Society seemed a logical move. The Society’s web site needed a major update and she took that on. In 2007, she was asked to stand as Chairman… and then followed 11 very productive years for the Society.
Sadly we also have to say goodbye, and to thank, Committee members who stood down at the AGM: Martin Lander, our Treasurer, who has kept the Society’s finances in good order for the last three years and Mike Sockett who has taken on numerous activities over the last 11 years, and has always been the first to volunteer when help is needed. Not the least of his successes has been providing excellent drinks and the sound system for Society events.

We were delighted to welcome several new people on to the Committee in 2017.

David Langridge
David Langridge was educated at the Royal School Armagh and Trinity College Dublin where he read Geography as a Natural Science. He became a secondary teacher in Dublin and then went on to lecture in the Education Department of University College Cork while at the same time working for his PhD in Education.

David came to live in Stamford with his wife Pat in 1994 having previously lived and worked for 17 years in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, as Headmaster of Ramsey Abbey.

After a further two years commuting from Stamford to Ramsey he took early retirement from the Abbey and secured a position directing the Education Service for the Falkland Island Government, a post which he held for almost five years before returning to Stamford.

After four years as Secretary of St Peter’s Community Group David took over from Melanie Sockett as Secretary of the Stamford Civic Society in October 2017
Andrew Moore
After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Thornton Baker, I worked for Ruberoid for a couple of years as a Financial Controller and then as a management consultant for five years with Touche Ross in France in Ferney-Voltaire where I worked on the liquidation of IOS (Investors Overseas Services). The last 25 years of my working life were spent with Central Wool Growers Ltd in Uffington Road where I started as Financial Controller then became Finance Director and eventually retired as Managing Director in 2005.
Picture
After retirement, I was an SKDC district councillor for six years and a New College governor for five years. I have also been a member of Stamford Vision and The Stamford Town Partnership.

Currently I am a Trustee of Truesdale Hospital, Treasurer of the Grantham and Stamford Conservative Association and a Trustee of the Central Wool Growers Ltd Pension Scheme. I have also had two spells as Treasurer of Rutland County Golf Club’s Seniors Section.

I’m hoping I will be able to put my business and financial skills to good use for the benefit of the Civic Societ
Andy Moore
Originally from Sheffield I moved to Stamford 6 years ago having previously lived in Market Deeping for over 30 years.

All of my working life has been in construction initially as a Quantity Surveyor and for over 20 years as Managing Director of a local Groundworks and Civil Engineering company before retiring last Christmas at 60.
Picture
My interests include travelling, walking, trekking, DIY and sport, particularly football, and I have a long association with Deeping Rangers FC, have been Chairman of Deeping Sports and Social Club for over 16 years and am a season ticket holder at Sheffield United!

I have joined the Civic Society Committee and Urban Group to add my enthusiasm and construction experience to helping maintain and improve Stamford.
