Highlights of the Year - October 2015-October 2016
At the AGM Gwyneth Gibbs, our Chairman, thanked Committee members and others whose efforts have enabled the Society to continue its work. She paid special tribute to Peter Stevens and Gil Williams, long-standing Committee members, who stood down in October and welcomed David Lankester and Paddy Jelen to the Committee.
Our Annual Review gives more details of the Society’s major activities, but the day to day work should not be forgotten. Gwyneth emphasised the importance of monitoring and commenting on planning applications in the Conservation Areas and working with SKDC’s Conservation Officer with the aim of preserving the essential Stamford, while still encouraging its prosperity.
The Urban Group, now part of the Society, continues to tackle a range of projects, both large and small, to improve the streets and open spaces in the town. See page 5 for further details.
Social activities provide the ‘glue’ that enables members to contribute to and enjoy their involvement with the Society. We are pleased that the summer party at St Leonard’s Priory has now turned into an annual event. Our programme of visits and talks is covered further in the following pages.
We were delighted to launch the Society’s note cards, based on the artist Karen Neale’s designs. You can find information about purchasing sets of the cards inside the back cover.
Gwyneth gave an early update on plans for next year’s events, which aim to commemorate and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the centre of Stamford being desig-nated the first Conservation Area in Great Britain in 1967. The Society looks forward to working with the Town Council, SKDC and other groups in the town to develop an exciting programme. Civic Voice, the umbrella organisation for civic societies, also hopes to mark the occasion by organising a one-day conference, to be held in Stamford, on conservation issues.
