Recognising the best

We depend on the commitment, skill and dedication of many people to keep Stamford looking good – as befits the first Conservation Area. We value the contributions of impressive craftsmen, the determination of owners and architects to create notable buildings, the attractive displays and fittings that shop owners produce within the constraints of caring for old buildings and the beautiful green spaces made possible by the many volunteers who spend time and effort on planting and maintaining these areas.

Every two or three years the Society asks its members to suggest developments and refurbishments in the town that should be noted and celebrated. This has been an outstanding year and our winners are as wide-ranging as ever.

Restoration
Jill Armstrong has enhanced Stamford’s heritage by the imaginative restoration of the former bookshop in St. George’s Street so that it now forms a lovely house.

Protecting Stamford
Ian Campbell OBE has tirelessly worked to protect Stamford’s heritage in founding Stamford! Protect Our Green Space.
Enhancing Stamford
David Dunn’s inspirational creation of the magnificent display of old photographs along Harrison & Dunn’s shopfront in Mallory Lane attracts visitors and residents alike.

Ann Ellis’ relentless determination to relaunch Stamford in Bloom galvanised many volunteers to enhance Stamford’s green spaces and was successful in getting a silver award in the East Midlands in Bloom competition.

John Regis of Stamford Pressure Washing has carried out meticulous work in keeping the Albert Bridge in pristine condition in his own time and at his own expense.

Michael Thurlby has improved the Crown Hotel and Paten & Co pub in the Red Lion Square area by restoring historic facades and enhancing them with lovely floral displays.

Architecture and Design
Simon Harris of Harris McCormack Architects has made impressive contributions to Stamford’s streetscape through the creation of innovative buildings in Stamford, particularly in Marshall’s Yard and Priory Road.
Special award
John Smith BEM FSA – a lifetime award for his never ceasing efforts in researching, communicating and advising on Stamford’s rich architectural history
