Since the last newsletter:
Thursday April 23rd: Stuart Orme returned to give a thoroughly enjoyable talk about Georgian Peterborough.
Events programme
Tickets are available from the Secretary.
Tuesday May 26th: Open garden in Stamford – Peter Heyes will be opening his garden for us, between 6pm and 8pm. As usual for events such as this, tickets will be issued. Entrance for members is free of charge, but donations to a charity of Peter's choice will be gratefully received on the night.
Tuesday June 2nd: a private visit to Island Hall, Godmanchester. Please meet at the Hall at 2.15pm. The cost for this will be £12 and numbers are limited, so please contact Melanie as soon as possible if you wish to go. We need final numbers by May 12th, so please book before then.
Saturday June 20th: St Leonard's Priory evening event, with snacks and a glass of wine from 6pm to 7.30pm. There is no charge to members; non-members are asked to give a donation to the Society.
Monday September 21st: Visit by coach to the Wedgwood museum in Stoke on Trent. This visit will be led by Gil Darby, who spoke to us about Wedgwood last year. This will be a full day trip; we are looking at the possibility of including a visit to Trentham Gardens as well as the museum. The cost to include the coach will be about £30-£35, excluding lunch, and if we included Trentham Gardens, that would add another £7.50 to the cost.
2015 AGM This will be held in October; date still to be agreed.
The Society's Storage problem
Inevitably, we have acquired a lot of stuff over the years that needs to be kept, but not necessarily referenced frequently. At the moment, it is stored in various committee members' houses, but it is getting more of a problem to find enough room, and to keep track of where things are. So we are looking for an alternative.
Can any member suggest somewhere we might be able to find a room in an office for example? We would not need access very often; it could be by appointment, in office hours. We are probably talking about one filing cabinet and 3-4 archive boxes in terms of quantity.
The Stones of Stamford Revisited
This booklet written by Rachel Morley of Hirst Conservation, is now available to purchase in Walker's Bookshop and the Arts Centre, price £5.00. We hope it will prove essential reading and be a useful reference for everyone who has a stone house in and around Stamford.
Creative writing essay competition
You probably saw the article about this in January's Stamford Living; judging has now taken place, and the winner's essay will be on our website in the next few days.
Stone Trail
Just a reminder about the new version of the previously out of print Stone Trail, It is now available from the Library and the Tourist Information Centre, at the price of £1. Proceeds will go to the Stamford Library and Heritage Centre.
Annual Review
We have some spare copies; if any member would like one (or more) to pass to friends who might like to become members, please let us know.
Civic Society Website
I hope you do occasionally take a look at our website; we try to update it regularly. If you haven't seen the changes to the Heritage section, you might like to have a look at that, for example.
More members please!
The more members we have, the more we can make our voice heard. If you have friends who might be interested in joining the Society, please point them at our web site, where they can download the application form, or ask them to get in touch by phone or letter.
